Granulation is an ancient jewelry making technique in which tiny balls of gold or fine silver are fused to a backsheet, in beautiful patterns, without the use of solder. The granules are put in place, one by one, with an extremely fine brush and a small amount of a special glue which burns off once heat is applied. When the entire pattern is complete, the metal is heated with a torch or in a small kiln. Heating is done in very slow stages, to a precise point where the tiny metal balls and the backsheet adhere to one another, but do not get hot enough to melt. The granules then become permanently fused to the back sheet. Granulation is labor intensive, and very time consuming. It requires a steady hand and a great deal of patience. Granulation is seen on ancient Greek and Roman jewelry, and on ancient Chinese jewelry. It is very beautiful as you can see on this page and on the next page of Gold Granulation.
