HOW ELEGANT INSECT JEWELRY IS MADE

lost wax casting

Elegant Insects insect and dragonfly jewelry is made in the ancient method of Lost Wax Casting. In the first step of this method, the Artist sculpts or carves an original object in jeweler's wax. This becomes the model. The model is than encased in a special container with a plaster like material called the investment. When the investment hardens, the container is placed in a burn-out oven, and is heated at high temperatures. As the wax melts, it runs out of an exit channel that had been carved in the model, leaving a space that is the exact shape of the model. Next, the metal (Sterling Silver in our jewelry) is heated until it is molten, and under high heat and pressure is forced into the cavity left by the burned out wax. When it has cooled, the investment is broken off and the original model emerges. It has now been cast in sterling silver. If only one copy is desired, the piece will be ready for finishing. If more than one copy is needed, a new mold will be made, usually in silicone. This is pressed around the metal model, which, when it is removed, leaves an exact space which can then be used to make more pieces that are exactly the same.

Although many jewelry artists do their own casting, many rely on professional casting services to do the work, since a great deal of equipment and specialized expertise is needed.

Once the piece has been cast, several more procedures need to be done before it can be considered finished. The cast piece needs to be smoothed, and polished. Additional details, such as adding antenna, legs, beads or other decorative elements need to be completed. The pin stems or earring backs need to be added so that the item can be worn. The last step is to set gemstones or add beads. A final polishing and the piece of jewelry is finished.
