ELEGANT INSECTS MEDIEVAL BEASTS -REAL AND IMAGINARY and frogs and other such things
The Medieval Period, also known as the Middle Ages ranged roughly from 500-1500BC. During that time, many new discoveries about nature were made. Scientists and artists illustrated many new species that they actually saw for themselves, or heard about from explorers. This gave rise to illustrations of unique animals and insects that may or may not have actually existed, Some of them did exist, but the representations of them were unusual and only imagined by the artist. Although they are not really related to insects, they share the same beauty and complexity of form, uniqueness and aura of the exotic, and in our eyes, somehow seem to be related. Unusual, exotic and mysterious forms, sea creatures such as eels, manta rays, flying fish and other warm and cold blooded creatures, are fascinating and visually unique. Most of our inspiration for these images come from early woodcuts and drawings of real and imagined animals of land and sea some dating from the 12th to the 16th centuries.
